Résumé

Avant 1960, la logistique en tant que champ d'étude en management n'existait pas vraiment. Cette publication retrace la pensée logistique depuis ses premiers développements jusqu'à aujourd'hui où elle a acquis une importance stratégique dans les décisions commerciales et industrielles. Avant l'adoption de l'optique marketing et de ses outils de mise en œuvre, les 4P (Produit, Promotion, Place, Prix), la logistique et le marketing étaient considérés comme des composantes d'un même processus. Le déclin de l'approche fonctionnelle, approche qui a dominé l'étude du marketing depuis ses débuts académiques, a eu comme conséquence la séparation de la stimulation de la demande de la satisfaction de cette demande, les deux grandes fonctions fondamentales du marketing. La logistique occupe aujourd'hui un rôle clé à l'intérieur des entreprises dû en partie au développement rapide des technologies de l'information. La logistique est aujourd'hui au cœur de la stratégie des entreprises car elle assure un rôle aussi bien en gestion de l'offre qu' en gestion de la demande. Avec une focalisation sur la réduction des coûts d'opérations et la formation de partenariat avec les membres du circuit, la logistique est considérée aujourd'hui comme un champ indispensable pour aider les entreprises à obtenir des avantages compétitifs durables.
