On a souvent tendance à considérer le JAT comme une philosophie ou une approche des deux dernières décennies, approche ayant pour origine le modèle japonais et plus particulièrement le système Toyota. Quelle erreur! Les principes du JAT ont un siècle et il est intéressant de se replonger dans les publications et dans les ouvrages sortis depuis le début du vingtième siècle pour réaliser comment, sous d'autres formes, le JAT était déjà présent dans toutes les entreprises de pointe.
